Handmade Footbridge

That sounds funny…handmade footbridge. Footmade handbridge…handfoot bridgemade…madebridge foothand…  Confused now? Me too 🙂

Anyhoo, I have a different kind of furniture for you today.

My sister and I were recently brainstorming about a gift for our mom and she had the wonderful idea of a footbridge. My mom goes walking on some trails behind her house every day and has to cross a muddy spot every time. Footbridge to the rescue!

So pen to the paper I went and drew up some plans.

I couldn’t help but second guess myself in the midst of building it.  Building without a formal plan can be a little tricky.

It was starting to look a little boxy, so we threw in some decorative scrolls on the side by using the jigsaw.

Oh, and I have no explanation for my shoe-less husband 🙂 He sure is handsome though!

…sorry, got a little side-tracked….

Back to the footbridge!

Here it is all built and assembled! Nothing fancy, but good enough to get the job done.

I stained it a dark walnut color and added an outdoor protective coat. You can find the stain I used here and the poly I used here.

I forgot to get a picture of it actually doing it’s job! (This is in their backyard and not covering the muddy spot). Oh well, I’ll get a picture next time I visit.

I was a little worried about it being sturdy enough. My mom called me the day after I gave it to her to say that there were bike tire marks all over it 🙂 So I guess if it can hold up to a bunch of kids riding their bikes over it, that’s good enough for me.

This was the first time I’ve tried something plan-less and I’m so happy I tried. Moral of the story…just try. You never know how it might turn out!

Have you ever built anything from scratch? I’d love to hear about it! Until then, I’ll be working on my footmade handbridge 🙂

Hello! I came over here from Sawdust and Paper Scraps. Oh my gosh, I have to LOL at myself. I first typed Craps, instead of Scraps, ah well. Kind of like your Footmade Handbridge. Ha! I just want to say I love this piece and I wish you would share your dimensions and maybe even share it on Ana White as well! My backyard is a blank canvas and I’ve thought something like this would be a cute jumping off point. It doesn’t look too difficult, but since you’ve already built it I thought it would be easier still if you shared the dimensional lumber size you used and the dimensions of the cuts, etc. Pretty please? 🙂 By the way, love your blog and your projects and that barn door is fab!!!
